Climate change is intensifying the frequency and magnitude of floods, making their management one of the greatest challenges for community safety and territorial sustainability. This course offers a specialization in flood risk assessment and the design of adaptation strategies, integrating scientific, normative and quantitative analysis fundamentals from a multidisciplinary approach.
The course begins by establishing the general concepts in climate risk assessment, providing the conceptual framework necessary to characterize the flood hazard and its consequences. Next, students will learn techniques for the treatment of hydroclimatic data, the mathematical formulations and models available for flood hazard characterization, and methodologies to assess exposure, vulnerability and probabilistic risk.
Finally, the course focuses on the evaluation of flood risk adaptation and mitigation measures, considering both structural and non-structural solutions, highlighting the applicability and effect of Nature-Based Solutions. Methodologies to analyze the effectiveness and cost/benefit of different intervention strategies are also presented.
The course is aimed at students and professionals of civil engineering, hydrology, environmental management, civil protection and territorial planning who wish to acquire an applied perspective to integrated watershed management, specializing in flood risk assessment and management, developing practical skills to face this growing climatic emergency.
